New Grenadian International Airport OpensPosted: 11th Jul 2009 The newly located and renamed international airport of Grenada has finally opened. The next time you land into Grenada you will find that the Airport is now Maurice Bishop International airport formerly Point Salines International Airport. Caribbean leaders remembered former Grenadian Prime Minister Maurice Bishop during a ceremony to rename Grenada’s international airport after the late Grenadian revolutionary. The airport carry’s the name of the former Prime Minister, who in 1979 was active in the decision to construct a new airport. For a country dependent on tourism, this was seen as a necessity for the development of tourism in Grenada. Grenada Prime Minister Maurice Bishop sought and received Cuban assistance to build the airport A new departure lounge was also unveiled at the airport, which was formally opened on October 28, 1984.
