Trinidad and Tobago Celebrates 48 Years of Independence.Posted: 31st Aug 2010 Today will see Trinidadians and Tobagonians celebrate its 48th year of independence. People at home and nationals abroad will be gathering for a celebration and remembrance of such a momentous occasion. Trinidad and Tobago gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. At midnight on 30th August 1962 the Union Jack flag was lowered and the Trinidad and Tobago flag was raised for the first time. The first independence was marked with over a week of festivities and events across the country. Independence Day today is celebrated with a military style parades held at the Queens Park Savannah, Port of Spain and in Scarborough, Tobago. After the official activities have taken place at the parade grounds, the group march through the streets with live music played by the bands of the various forces (e.g. Police, Fire and Prison bands). Cheering spectators line the parade route creating a carnival-like atmosphere. The day of celebration comes to a close with a spectacular fireworks display at the Queens Park Savannah, Port of Spain and the Port Authority Compound, Scarborough Tobago.
