Mavado Defends His LyricsPosted: 10th Oct 2009 Jamaican dancehall/reggae artist Mavado seems to be still causing controversy with his album “Gangster For Life” which was released back in 2007. The disagreement stems from the view that he promotes negative attitudes through homophobia, and the glamorization of violence and gun crime. This has now prompted several Caribbean Islands and other countries to ban him from performing on their soil. In recent weeks the issue of Mavado performing in Guyana came to light, being that he was already scheduled to perform caused reasons for debate as to whether he should be allowed to perform or not. Mavado’s ban has now since been lifted and he has already performed at Guyana's National Park. Mavado was born and raised in the region of “Cuba” in Jamaica and he defends his lyrics saying there were a response to what he saw around him and the only way they would change was when society changed. Mavado in fact urges his fans not to act out what he sang because he himself was not going out there and doing anyone anything. He was only doing music. Written By: Nadia Auckburally
