Black History Month 2009Posted: 4th Oct 2009 In the United Kingdom, Black History Month is celebrated throughout the month of October. The origins of Black History Month goes back to 1926, when Carter G Woodson; editor of Negro History established African Caribbean celebrations in America during the month of February each year. Here in the UK, Akyaaba Addai Sebbo who worked for the Greater London Council established the event back in 1987. He is viewed as the person who founded Black History Month here in Britain.
During the month of October the aim has always been to promote the people of African and Caribbean origin into knowledge of Black history and experience, circulate information on positive Black contributions to British Society, and heighten the confidence and awareness of Black people in their cultural heritage. Fundamentally it’s a month were we should educate others and ourselves about the forgotten heroes and stories that we never got taught at school.
