Trinidad and Tobago Celebrates 47 years of Independence.

Happy Independence Day to Trinidad and Tobago. 

For all of you whom celebrated on the 31st August 2009, this year saw the celebration of 47 years of Trinidad and Tobago being independent from the United Kingdom.

Trinidad and Tobago gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. At midnight on 30th August 1962 the Union Jack flag was lowered and the Trinidad and Tobago flag was raised for the first time.

The first independence was marked with over a week of festivities and events across the country.

Independence Day today is celebrated with a military style parades held at the Queens Park Savannah, Port of Spain and in Scarborough, Tobago.

After the official activities have taken place at the parade grounds, the group march through the streets with live music played by the bands of the various forces (e.g. Police, Fire and Prison bands). Cheering spectators line the parade route creating a carnival-like atmosphere.

The day of celebration comes to a close with a spectacular fireworks display at the Queens Park Savannah, Port of Spain and the Port Authority Compound, Scarborough Tobago.
